Resilience, Resourcefulness, and Repositioning For Success

I recently heard the phrase “We are living in uncertain times.” That's followed up by you never know what's going to happen. How can we have certainty when the times around us are uncertain? How can we have confidence when things around us seem to be falling apart? Whether we're leading others or ourselves how do we get unstuck and move forward? These are a few things I've been pondering based on several interactions I've had. How do we maintain stability when so many systems around us display their instability?

These questions are impacted by the filters in which we view life, circumstances, and situations. Feelings of being unstuck or uncertain are based on our state. These feelings are indications of our state, and we are usually unresourceful in these states. Being transparent how do we not let everything going on outside of us impact us on the inside? What happens when you've done all you could do? We can intentionally build our resilience, develop our resourcefulness, and strategically reposition ourselves for success.

Resilience

Resilience does not look the same in all situations. In some situations, it may be about you bouncing back, and other situations about you going over, and other situations may be going under, and other situations stepping out of the way. People are often expected to be resilient although they may have not intentionally been building it. What is resilience? Resilience is, “the capacity of people to effectively cope with, adjust, or recover from stress or adversity”-Resilience Thinking: Integrating Resilience, Adaptability, and Transformability.

Dr. Ungar, who does a lot of work with resilience, emphasizes that the two important elements of resilience are having resources either individual or collective, and the mindset of what the individual or group of individuals are thinking and how they're thinking.   Having access to resources can help people to pivot, grow, adapt, and be resilient because they have the things necessary to assist them in the process.  What and how you think is powerful because a positive mindset, the ability to shift your perception, or what you think allows for resilience to be demonstrated in a variety of life circumstances and situations that you may encounter. An integral part of building resilience is having resources, as well as, a mindset that allows us the opportunity and access to be more resourceful as we are being more resilient.

Resourcefulness

Having resources is helpful to be resilient but doesn't make you resourceful. You can have resources but not know how to access your resourcefulness.  Resourcefulness is about accessing positive states that allow us the ability and capacity to produce strategies and solutions to address challenges, situations, and circumstances. Resourcefulness is about being able to tap into your ability to change your state to help you effectively and efficiently navigate your situation, circumstances, and life.

One of the ways that we develop resourcefulness is by improving our mindset, skill set, and toolset and how we empower ourselves. Being able to think differently, having the skills to shift states, and having the tools needed to function inwardly impact and influence the results and outcomes outwardly. Our ability to be resourceful helps aid us in repositioning ourselves for success.

Repositioning

Have you ever felt like you were in a position that was just uncomfortable? A helpful way to address being uncomfortable is to readjust or reposition. Repositioning ourselves is all about learning, unlearning, and relearning. Learning new information helps to increase our ability to change our mindset, unlearning information helps us to let go of things that no longer serve us, and relearning helps us to repurpose information and skills to use in new ways innovatively and creatively. Repositioning ourselves allows us to take a different place, posture, or position which impacts not only how we see things but the way we see things. This is helpful in times when you feel uncertain, like there's no way out, repositioning yourself helps you to see other angles, other options, and opportunities.

Repositioning is a confidence builder because it helps us to recognize the power we must shift and put ourselves in a more desirable position for our success. Repositioning ourselves also helps us to realize how to move from states that are no longer serving us to states that do serve us.

Practices

What are some things that can be done to build resilience, develop resourcefulness, and strategically reposition? We'll discuss 2 practices that are practical and pragmatic and could be implemented right away. One practice is called perceptual positions. You use three points of view to view a situation, circumstance, or interaction. The first point of view is from your point of view how you see things, the second point of view is from another's point of view, and the third point of view is from a neutral observer point of view. What this does is it helps us to start practicing our ability to change our perception and filter. According to Dr. Wayne Dyer, when you change how you see things you change what you see.

The second practice is journaling. The way you can use your journal is to write down your thoughts, feelings, or experiences. The key here is that you add the meaning. If you see it as negative, why? If you see it as positive, why? If you see it as neutral, why? The difference here is you become aware of the meaning and story that you're adding that's creating your experience, results, and outcomes. Typically, this happens but many are unaware that is happening. Life doesn't happen the way life happens life happens the way you are or the meaning that you add. You decide. What you're doing is building your resilience, developing your resourcefulness, and intentionally repositioning. Both practices help empower us by recognizing our ability and capacity to be resilient, and resourceful, and reposition ourselves effectively.

Conclusion

In conclusion, we can have certainty when the times around us are uncertain, build confidence when things around us seem to be falling apart, get unstuck and move forward, and gain stability by building our resilience, developing our resourcefulness, and strategically repositioning ourselves. There are a variety of strategies, methods, and tools that can assist with our resilience, resourcefulness, and ability to reposition ourselves.  It is critical to invest in our mindset, skill set, and toolset to effectively navigate the current times and beyond.  Our development- personal, professional, leadership, or organizational is the key to our success and others.
