There are behaviors that leaders should exemplify. The behaviors must be developed in order for leaders to be effective. There is a challenge to every leader which is captured in the work of Kouzes and Posner (2012), which states that “the Leadership Challenge is all about how leaders mobilize others to want to make extraordinary things happen in organizations.” The question to be asked then is how can leaders be developed and motivated to accomplish this level of leadership?
Leadership behavior impacts employee commitment which influences employee performance and gauges effectiveness. Kouzes and Posner (2012) research discussed that these five exemplary leadership behaviors are needed for leaders to do extraordinary things in organizations. The five exemplary leadership behaviors are:
1. Model the way
2. Inspire a shared vision
3. Challenge the process
4. Enable others to act
5. Encourage the heart
How can these exemplary leadership behaviors be cultivated and utilized by leaders and organizations? The Leadership Challenge is about putting practices in place to transform values into actions, visions into realities, obstacles into innovations, separateness into solidarity, and risks into rewards by creating the climate in which challenges become opportunities toward success (Kouzes and Posner, 2012). What kind of leader are you presently? What kind of leader do you want to become? How does your organization develop leaders?
